About

About ACVV

The ACVV (Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue Vereniging) is one of South Africa's oldest non-profit organisations, with over a century of service in the social welfare field. The ACVV National Council (NPO 002-834) operates 115 branches across the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and Free State. Each branch is registered as an individual NPO and is managed locally by community volunteers acting as employers. Together the branches deliver 220 service programmes across five focus areas: social work and child protection, early childhood development, older persons and special needs, leadership, and training.

The ACVV is one of only a few Designated Child Protection Organisations (DCPOs) in South Africa — meaning, in terms of the Children's Act (Act 38 of 2005), it is legally authorised to render the full scope of child protection services from prevention through to statutory intervention.

ACVV Bredasdorp

The Bredasdorp branch is the designated child protection service for the Cape Agulhas local municipality, one of South Africa's most southern districts and home to a predominantly rural and farming community. Their social work office is staffed by registered social workers and social service practitioners, and provides services to children, youth, and families across the breadth of the Overberg coastal region.

Services Relevant to GBV and Abuse Survivors

  • Therapeutic counselling for child and adult survivors of abuse, including sexual abuse and domestic violence.
  • Statutory intervention — removal of children to places of safety, court representation, safety and risk assessments, and foster care placement where children are at risk in the home.
  • Early intervention programmes — the Wolanani Life Skills programme, parenting skills development, mediation and parenting plans, and the Eye-on-the-Child programme for at-risk families.
  • Red My Lips campaign — ACVV participates nationally in the Red My Lips campaign raising awareness of and breaking the silence around sexual violence.
  • 16 Days of Activism — awareness and community education programming on family violence and gender-based violence during the annual UN campaign.
  • Social Work Puppets programme — community-facing educational outreach using puppetry to address child protection, abuse prevention, and behaviour change in schools and community settings.
  • Prevention programmes — Child Protection Month programming, awareness campaigns, and community engagement to prevent abuse before it occurs.

Reach

ACVV nationally reaches over 320,000 children and their families through 53 social work offices, 229 social workers and social service practitioners, and 4 Child and Youth Care Centres. The Bredasdorp branch serves the Cape Agulhas district, including the towns of Bredasdorp, Struisbaai, L'Agulhas, and surrounding farming communities.
