About

Bophelo Child and Youth Care Centre is a registered non-profit organisation and place of safety in Kimberley that has been providing care for the most vulnerable children since 2004. Their name — Bophelo, meaning "life" in Sesotho and Setswana — reflects their core mission: to give children in need a real chance at life, love, and a stable home. Since opening their doors, they have cared for over 140 children, many of whom would otherwise have had no safe place to go.

They operate two residential facilities: one for babies and young children, and a second for older children. The organisation follows a pro-life approach and is supported by local churches, community organisations, and faith communities in Kimberley.

What They Offer Survivors and Families

Residential Care for Abandoned and Neglected Children Bophelo provides a warm, safe home for babies and children who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, or whose parents cannot care for them. Children receive love, education, nutrition, healthcare, and a stable environment. For survivors who have had to leave home and have children who need a safe place, Bophelo can be a vital resource.

Long-Term Care for Children with Disabilities and Special Needs The centre provides dedicated long-term residential care for children with disabilities and special needs — a group that is particularly vulnerable to abandonment and abuse and for whom very few specialised places of safety exist.

Crisis Pregnancy Support If you are facing a crisis pregnancy — whether as a result of rape, abuse, or other overwhelming circumstances — Bophelo offers support and guidance. Their social workers will help you explore all your options in a non-judgmental, supportive environment.

Adoption Facilitation For babies and children without families, Bophelo works toward placing them in permanent, loving adoptive homes — both locally and through appropriate legal processes. They also support birth mothers who have made the courageous decision to place their babies for adoption, walking that journey with them with compassion.

Bophelo is specifically for children in the Kimberley and Northern Cape area. If you are a survivor in the Northern Cape dealing with a crisis pregnancy or need to find a place of safety for a child, contact them via WhatsApp: 083 688 3455.
