Campaign For Girls

Verified Open

Campaign for Girls is a Johannesburg-based national youth development initiative founded in 2010 and launched at Constitution Hill during Women's Month, focused on the holistic empowerment of young women in Grade 11 and 12 from rural, township, and urban areas across South Africa — through three pillars: self-development, career development, and community involvement. Built around genuine individual relationships with each girl rather than mass programming, Campaign for Girls uses roadshows, school visits, mall activations, and social media to reach young women at a critical life stage, building the confidence, skills, and sisterhood that protect against GBV vulnerability and create pathways out of poverty.

About

Campaign for Girls was conceived and launched by twin sisters Hlelo and Ntando Masina — media personalities and youth leaders — alongside development professional Bianca Williams, who has been instrumental in translating the vision into operational programmes since the organisation's inception. Launched at Johannesburg's Constitution Hill in August 2010 during Women's Month, Campaign for Girls (CFG) is a deliberate statement: that the Constitution's promise of equality belongs to every young South African woman, including those from rural communities and townships who have never been told that it does.

CFG is a nationwide initiative targeting girls in Grade 11 and 12 — a life stage defined by pressure, vulnerability, and enormous potential. Their approach is built on three pillars, executed through direct, sustained relationships with individual girls rather than once-off interventions.

What They Offer Young Women

Self-Development — Identity, Confidence, and Resilience CFG's self-development pillar addresses the inner life of each young woman: her sense of self, her awareness of her own strengths, her resilience in the face of the pressures — including GBV, peer pressure, and poverty — that shape the lives of girls in Grade 11 and 12. The programme recognises that each girl is unique, with her own aspirations, challenges, and strengths, and applies its work accordingly — not through a one-size-fits-all intervention but through personal engagement.

Career Development — Pathways out of Vulnerability Economic independence is one of the most powerful protections against GBV. CFG's career development pillar helps young women understand and access pathways through education and employment — building the awareness and skills they need to plan a future that is not defined by dependence on others.

Community Involvement — Sisterhood and Social Responsibility CFG builds the spirit of sisterhood — encouraging young women to see themselves as part of a network of mutual support, and to take their skills and confidence back into their own communities.

Roadshows, School Visits, and Mall Activations CFG meets girls where they are — through roadshows reaching schools from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy to high schools in Thaba Nchu, through mall activations, and through social media. Their approach is relational and direct, creating space for young women to open up about what matters and what worries them.

Long-term Mentorship and Support CFG's stated strength is its ability to create and maintain direct, sustained relationships with girls — supporting them through their final years of high school and beyond, not just at the moment of a workshop.
