About
Services
After-school programme: Academic support and psychosocial support for 90 primary school learners. For many children in Darling, this is the only structured support outside school hours. The psychosocial component is directly relevant to children experiencing abuse, family violence, neglect, or poverty stress.
Wordworks programme (in-school): A literacy-focused early childhood programme embedded with Grade 1 learners at local schools, accommodating 20 pupils. Wordworks is an evidence-based programme that builds early literacy and numeracy through structured activity.
Holiday programme: A life skills programme reaching approximately 300 learners annually during school holidays. Life skills include topics directly relevant to GBV prevention education: personal boundaries, healthy relationships, decision-making, and safety.
Nutrition: The organisation is registered with the Western Cape Government's Department of Social Development under the Sustainable Livelihoods Targeted Feeding Programme, which provides targeted food support to people experiencing hunger and malnutrition outside the Department of Health's Nutritional Therapeutic Programme.
Women's skills development: Workshops equipping local women with skills to start small businesses — financial literacy, practical business skills, and livelihood development. Economic independence is one of the most significant protective factors against GBV.
Location and Context
Darling is approximately 75km north of Cape Town via the R27 West Coast Road. For residents of Darling and the surrounding farms, accessing specialist social work, GBV counselling, or legal services typically requires travel to Malmesbury (Swartland municipality seat, ~40km) or Cape Town. Darling Outreach Foundation is one of the few organisations with a permanent community presence and any social work capacity in the town itself.
For GBV survivors in the Darling/Swartland area, Darling Outreach Foundation is a community-level touchpoint and referral pathway. For specialist crisis services: - GBV Command Centre: 0800 428 428 (toll-free, 24/7) - Swartland SAPS (Malmesbury): 022 487 1007 - Badisa Malmesbury (DSD-funded social work, Western Cape North): enquire via Badisa Head Office +27 23 347 4452 / badisa.org.za - Child Welfare Western Cape: 021 638 3602
