About
Doorway to Dignity was established in November 2016 by Trevor and his team at Ferndale Bible Chapel in Randburg, from a simple but powerful conviction: that every human being — regardless of how they ended up on the street — deserves to be treated with dignity and to have hope restored. Their primary strategy is to partner with like-minded organisations and mobilise their community to deliver practical, love-driven projects that meet immediate needs while restoring people's sense of worth and agency.
They are not a walk-in crisis centre or formal shelter, but a community-based relief and dignity network that activates Johannesburg's generosity on behalf of its most vulnerable residents — including survivors of abuse who have been left homeless.
What They Offer Vulnerable People and Survivors
Jars of Hope — Food Relief Doorway to Dignity's signature project is the Jar of Hope — a sealed jar of nutritious, filling soup ingredients (rice, lentils, soup mix, stock cube) that can feed four or more people with just water and cooking. These jars are packed by community volunteers and distributed to homeless individuals, vulnerable families, and communities hit by disaster. In 2022, 1,000 jars were distributed as part of Mandela Day, and 30 families made homeless by a shack fire in Zandspruit received jars that same night. No family in crisis should go to bed hungry.
Pots of Hope — Annual Community Dining Event Every year around World Homeless Day (10 October), Doorway to Dignity hosts their flagship Pots of Hope event — a pop-up restaurant where homeless and displaced community members are invited to sit down, order from a menu, and be served by waiters, just like anyone else in a restaurant. Meals come from a potjiekos competition among community contestants, judged by professional chefs. This is about far more than food — it is a profound act of dignity, saying to people the street has made invisible: you matter, you deserve to be served, you are welcome here.
Clothing, Blankets, and Toiletries Distribution Regular collections and distributions of clothing, blankets, and toiletries reach homeless and vulnerable people across Randburg — addressing basic survival needs with practical generosity.
Feeding Schemes Doorway to Dignity supports and runs feeding schemes for vulnerable community members — providing ongoing, reliable access to meals for those who have no other food security.
Counselling Counselling support is available for those experiencing crisis, homelessness, and vulnerability — recognising that survival needs and emotional needs cannot be separated.
Temporary Shelter (Crisis Activation) During national lockdown in 2020, Doorway to Dignity activated a temporary shelter to ensure no one in their community was left on the street during a period of unprecedented vulnerability. This crisis-response capacity can be mobilized when needed.
Community Partnerships Doorway to Dignity works in close partnership with other welfare organizations across the Western Cape and Johannesburg — including MES, Sheltersuit SA, and local churches — to ensure their efforts are coordinated, not duplicated, and that anyone who needs a service beyond their capacity is properly referred.
