Equilibrium Centre
OpenEquilibrium ("From Chains to Change") is a Cape Flats–based youth development and psychosocial support NPO operating from Matroosfontein in Elsies River, Cape Town — a community on the Cape Flats where substance abuse, gang violence, unemployment, and GBV are deeply interconnected. Its programmes span a 16-week psychosocial and substance abuse support programme (8 weeks early intervention + 8 weeks aftercare), a Character Youth Leadership Programme for Grade 8–12 learners, the Going for Gold / G4G leadership programme (linked to the President's Award), the Hadassah Girls Empowerment Programme (matric support for young women), a Youth Build unemployment programme with workplace placement support, a holiday club, and service delivery into the community's highest-risk age group for substance dependency (15–18 year olds). While not a dedicated GBV service, Equilibrium's work is deeply relevant to the survivor directory because substance abuse, youth gang involvement, and GBV on the Cape Flats are structurally inseparable — and young women exiting abusive environments often need exactly the psychosocial support and economic empowerment pathways that Equilibrium provides.

About
The Cape Flats suburbs of Elsies River and Matroosfontein carry the weight of decades of deliberate disadvantage. Created under apartheid's forced removals, these communities became — and remain — some of Cape Town's most under-resourced, with high rates of unemployment, substance abuse, gang activity, and gender-based violence. In this environment, Equilibrium was established with a direct and ambitious vision: personal and community transformation through coaching the spirit, soul, and body.
The tagline "From Chains to Change" describes both the population the organisation works with — young people bound by poverty, addiction, lack of opportunity, and violence — and the direction it points them toward.
Equilibrium operates across four interconnected domains — inspiration, influence, empowerment, and implementation — recognising that information alone does not change behaviour, and that real change requires practical skill-building, mentorship, community, and repeated supported practice.
Programmes
Psychosocial Support — Substance Abuse Intervention (16 Weeks) Equilibrium's flagship intervention is a 16-week structured programme specifically targeting substance dependency in young people. Weeks 1–8 form an early intervention programme based on the principle that immediate action is needed before problems become catastrophic — for both the young person and their family. Weeks 9–16 form an aftercare programme, supporting clients as they transition back into community life and maintaining the gains achieved in early intervention.
The programme identifies 15–18-year-olds as its highest-risk age group for substance dependency in the community — and focuses intensive support on this critical developmental window. On the Cape Flats, substance abuse and GBV are inseparable: young women in abusive relationships are often also in substance-affected environments, and exiting one often requires addressing both.
Service Delivery — Community Outreach Equilibrium engages directly with community members experiencing the most acute challenges — conducting outreach to those who will not seek services voluntarily, and building trust before introducing structured support.
Character Youth Leadership Programme — Grades 8 to 12 An after-school programme focused on the personal and social education of secondary school learners — particularly those most likely to be peer influencers. The programme uses a combination of classroom activities and sport-field activities to build character, personal responsibility, and social responsibility. It explicitly addresses whole-person health and well-being alongside academic and vocational development.
Going for Gold (G4G) / President's Award Leadership Programme The Going for Gold programme is linked to the internationally recognised President's Award, providing recognition and further study pathways for young participants who complete leadership milestones. This is a significant credential for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds seeking pathways into further education or employment.
Hadassah Girls Empowerment Programme One of Equilibrium's most distinctive projects is the annual Hadassah Matric Assistance project — led by co-founder Meagan Duckitt — which supports matric-year girls with functional support, motivation, and a vision of what is possible through academic diligence. In communities where young women are routinely told their futures are limited, this initiative challenges that narrative directly.
Youth Build Unemployment Programme The Youth Build programme addresses the structural driver that underlies so much vulnerability on the Cape Flats: unemployment. It builds employability skills, assists with placements at institutions for work experience, and provides the practical and soft skills needed to navigate a formal employment environment. Partnerships with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator and similar organisations may extend its reach.
Holiday Club A structured holiday programme for children and youth — providing safe, supervised, enriching activity during school holidays in a community where unsupervised holiday time can be a high-risk period.
