International Organisation for Migration (IOM)

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cape Town office is a sub-office of IOM South Africa, providing migration-related services and support to migrants, refugees, and victims of human trafficking in the Western Cape. About IOM – Cape Town

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organisation and the leading global body on migration. IOM South Africa's national headquarters are in Pretoria; the Cape Town office operates as a sub-office providing direct services to migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and vulnerable persons in the Western Cape.

IOM operates in South Africa under mandate from Member States to address migration governance, humanitarian needs, and protection challenges, including for victims of human trafficking and GBV.

Services Relevant to GBV and Trafficking Survivors

  • Counter-trafficking (CT) services: identification, referral, and support for victims of human trafficking — including migrant women and children trafficked for sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, or labour exploitation
  • Direct assistance to trafficking victims: emergency shelter referrals, medical care coordination, legal assistance, psychosocial support, and reintegration programming
  • Referrals to specialist services: liaison with Cape Town GBV shelters, TCCs, Legal Aid SA, UNHCR, and DHA for trafficking victims and migrant women escaping abuse
  • Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR): assisting stranded or exploited migrants who wish to return to their countries of origin
  • Emergency humanitarian assistance: for migrants and refugees in acute distress, including those fleeing domestic violence in their countries of origin
  • Migration health: health assessments and referrals for migrants and refugees
  • Psychosocial support and case management for vulnerable migrants, including GBV survivors
