About
iThemba acknowledges that trauma — whether a one-time event or repeated over time — has direct biological effects on a person's future health. They have dedicated counsellors and social workers on standby to conduct therapeutic interventions, debrief victims after a crime has been committed, and carry out follow-ups to ensure the continued mental wellbeing of each client. Their team of social workers, social auxiliary workers, and victim support members work with survivors in a compassionate and informed way, with the aim of helping them walk the road from victim to victor.
They work within a multi-departmental framework alongside government bodies. When victims arrive, social workers and victim supporters provide immediate assistance — including medical check-ups, collection of evidence for court cases, and, where needed, HIV prevention medication.
With 8 branches across the East Rand and Johannesburg, they are one of the most geographically distributed rape and trauma support networks in Gauteng.
