About Izwelethu Advice Centre

Izwelethu Advice Centre is a community-based paralegal and legal advice centre located in Vlakfontein (Extension 3), Lenasia, in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, southern Gauteng. It is a member of the Paralegal Institute of South Africa (PILS) network, which supports community advice offices across South Africa.

The name "Izwelethu" (isiZulu/isiXhosa: "our voice") reflects the organisation's mission to give community members — particularly vulnerable women — access to legal information and rights-based support.

Services Offered

  • Domestic violence paralegal assistance: help with applying for protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act, including completing court forms, accompanying clients to court, and explaining the legal process
  • Free legal advice and information on a range of matters affecting community members: maintenance, custody, landlord/tenant disputes, labour issues, consumer rights, social grants
  • GBV referral network: liaison with SAPS, social development, shelters, and specialist GBV services for survivors requiring more intensive support
  • Know Your Rights community education: awareness of the Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Offences Act, Children's Act, and other applicable legislation
  • Maintenance assistance: guidance for single mothers seeking maintenance from absent fathers through the maintenance court
  • Social grant assistance: guidance on SASSA applications (disability, child support, older persons grants)
