About
LifeLine Zululand is one of the largest and most deeply embedded LifeLine centres in South Africa. Since its founding in 1987, it has grown to employ 180 staff members, operate 54 service points, run 2 White Door temporary shelters, 2 crisis centres, and support 2 rape crisis centres across Northern KwaZulu-Natal. Approximately 75% of all its work relates to GBV, HIV/AIDS, and teenage pregnancy — making this an intensely survivor-focused organisation operating across one of South Africa's most underserved regions. Their annual budget runs between R20–30 million.
What They Offer Survivors
24-Hour Trauma Intervention and Crisis Line LifeLine Zululand's crisis line (035 789 7788) is available around the clock. Free telephone and face-to-face counselling and trauma debriefing are available to any community member in need.
Thuthuzela Care Centre — Ngwelezane Hospital (24/7) On behalf of the Department of Social Development, LifeLine Zululand staffs the Thuthuzela Care Centre at Ngwelezane Hospital near Empangeni — a 24-hour one-stop facility for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence providing psychosocial support, forensic assessment, medical care, and SAPS support, all under one roof.
White Door Temporary Shelters and Crisis Centres Two White Door shelters in two districts provide safe overnight and short-term accommodation for GBV survivors. Two crisis centres offer structured crisis support for those in acute danger or emotional crisis.
Victim Friendly Facilities — 38 Police Stations LifeLine Zululand operates Victim Friendly Facilities at 38 SAPS stations across three districts — meaning that if you report GBV or sexual assault at most police stations in Zululand, uMkhanyakude, or King Cetshwayo, a trained LifeLine counsellor is present to support you. This is an extraordinary reach.
GBV Psychosocial Support Programme Free psychosocial support, trauma debriefing, and containment counselling are provided across all 54 service points — supporting survivors at the moment of crisis and through the ongoing journey of healing.
Women Empowerment Programme A dedicated programme targeting women and girls aged 15–24 promotes GBV prevention, life skills, quality of life improvements, and HIV/AIDS adherence tracking. This programme was relaunched with funding from the AIDS Foundation of South Africa.
Sex Workers Programme Relaunched in 2022, LifeLine Zululand's Sex Workers Programme provides biomedical support, rights advocacy, HIV testing, condom distribution, and skills training for those seeking to exit the industry.
Men and Boys Initiative — Imbizo Yamadoda LifeLine engages traditional leaders, men, and boys through community dialogues, Imbizos, and sports events — challenging the norms that allow GBV to persist.
Community Wellness Services Across all three districts, LifeLine Zululand delivers: awareness talks and dialogues at schools, colleges, and businesses; HIV counselling and testing; peer educator training; life skills and personal growth programmes; employee wellness programmes; and suicide prevention and intervention.
Call the crisis line at any hour: 035 789 7788. For support at a nearby police station, find your district's Victim Friendly Facility through LifeLine Zululand's website.
