About

About the Mdantsane Thuthuzela Care Centre

The Mdantsane Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) is located at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital, Billy Road, Mdantsane NU4, East London, Eastern Cape, 5214. It is one of South Africa's oldest and most established TCCs — the original Mdantsane 24-hour stand-around centre for the community was installed in 1994, assisted by the NPA, Masimanaye Centre for Human Rights and Gender Violence, and the Provincial Department of Health. Dr Amitabh Mitra served as an early Head of the Thuthuzela Care Centre and was made an Ambassador to the Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner in recognition of this work.

Cecilia Makiwane Hospital is a 500-bed tertiary teaching hospital serving Mdantsane — South Africa's second-largest township after Soweto, home to over 300,000 residents in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The TCC sits within one of the highest-need sexual violence response catchment areas in South Africa.

Services

As with all TCCs in the national NPA network, Mdantsane TCC provides the full suite of integrated first-response services to rape and sexual assault survivors:

  • Medical examination and treatment by trained clinical staff
  • Forensic evidence collection — non-invasive procedures with survivor consent; J88 completed
  • HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) — critical within 72 hours of assault
  • Trauma counselling — immediate crisis counselling on site
  • Police statement — a SAPS investigating officer takes the statement at the TCC, removing the need to go to a police station
  • Court preparation — the TCC social worker monitors the case and prepares the survivor for court
  • Referrals — to specialist counselling, shelter, legal aid, and DSD services

The TCC is open during office hours at the hospital; emergency cases can present through the hospital emergency department at any time.
