About

About Mitchell's Plain Network Opposing Abuse

Mitchell's Plain Network Opposing Abuse (the MP Network) is a registered NPO based at the Beaconvale Community Care Centre, 2 Rambler Street, Beacon Valley, Mitchell's Plain, 7785. The organisation specialises in supporting trauma victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, violent crime, and disasters across Mitchell's Plain — one of Cape Town's largest townships, with a population estimated at over 400,000 residents in the Cape Flats.

Mitchell's Plain faces some of the Cape's highest rates of GBV, gang violence, substance abuse, and family breakdown. The MP Network is one of the primary community-based GBV and trauma support organisations serving this population.

Services

Crisis Intervention Counselling — immediate trauma counselling at Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court, where the MP Network has a court-based support presence. Victims accessing the Family Violence Court are provided emotional and practical support as well as legal information.

Trauma Counselling — psychological trauma counselling empowering survivors with coping skills to overcome grief, loss, and fear, enabling them to regain rational functioning after violent incidents.

Domestic Violence Support Groups — structured group sessions where survivors are educated to deal with challenges in relationships and build community-level support networks.

Family Violence Court Support Programme — assisting survivors with the formulation of sworn statements and navigating the Family Violence Court process at Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court.

Grief, Loss and Bereavement Therapy — specific therapeutic support for individuals processing loss associated with violence, including murder, assault, and bereavement.

Skills Development and Awareness — training for community members who wish to start their own NGOs; GBV awareness programmes; school-based bullying, truancy, and peer pressure awareness sessions.

Victimology Scope

The MP Network explicitly serves victims of: GBV, violent crimes (robbery, murder, assault, hijacking, human trafficking, sexual offences, gang violence), and property crimes. Services are rendered to all victims regardless of age, gender, race, or religion.
