About NISAA Institute for Women's Development
The NISAA Institute for Women's Development is a non-profit organisation established in 1994 that focuses on preventing gender-based violence and empowering women abused by their partners. NISAA is a member of the National Shelter Movement of South Africa (NSMSA) and operates a 24-hour toll-free helpline at 0800 001 005.
Services
- Crisis shelter — safe accommodation for abused women and their children for 4 to 6 weeks, with capacity for 22 women and children at any time.
- Counselling — free face-to-face, telephonic, and email counselling for survivors of domestic violence and GBV.
- Life skills programmes — workshops in the shelter covering parenting, self-esteem, healthy cooking, decision-making, and reproductive health.
- Children's support — counselling, educational support, and play therapy for children accompanying their mothers in the shelter.
- Legal aid referrals — assistance with protection orders, maintenance orders, identity documents, and referrals to legal aid clinics.
- Skills development — training in sewing, bead-making, and other income-generating skills to support economic independence.
- Advocacy — support with housing applications and government grant applications.
- Training — counselling courses for professionals and community members on the dynamics of abuse and how to assist survivors.
