About
North West House of Refuge (NWHR) is a Rustenburg-based non-profit organisation dedicated to welcoming, protecting, and integrating displaced communities — with a particular focus on vulnerable women and children — into the North West Province's social fabric. Their model is explicitly bidirectional: they help newcomers adapt to South African society, and help host communities adapt to an evolving, diverse society. They work with both refugees and local South African communities, believing that real integration is a shared journey.
Their founding vision states it simply: "Safety and opportunity are more than just ideas."
What They Offer Refugee and Migrant Survivors
Skills Training and Economic Inclusion — Chef Training (World University Service of Canada) In June 2025, NWHR trained 30 unemployed participants — including both local South Africans and asylum seekers from multiple countries — to become professionally qualified chefs, in partnership with the World University Service of Canada. This type of internationally recognised qualification creates genuine employment pathways for people who are often economically excluded. This training is emblematic of NWHR's approach: practical, dignified, and durable.
Women's Empowerment Women — particularly refugee and asylum-seeking women — are a primary focus of NWHR's work. Women in displaced communities face compounding vulnerability to GBV, exploitation, and poverty. NWHR provides specific support, empowerment, and advocacy for women navigating these challenges.
Elderly Care and Material Relief Every month, NWHR receives food parcels, clothing, and cash donations from local partners and redistributes these to elderly men and women in villages around Rustenburg — a community who are frequently forgotten in welfare planning.
Community Integration Support NWHR actively works to build bridges between displaced communities and host communities — facilitating understanding, reducing xenophobia, and creating the human connections that make integration real and lasting.
Advocacy and Rights Protection NWHR advocates for the human rights of refugees and asylum seekers in North West Province, working with local authorities and partners to ensure displaced communities can access the services, protections, and opportunities they are entitled to under South African and international law.
NWHR is in Rustenburg, North West Province. Visit www.nwhr.org.za to find out about current programmes and how to access support.
