About
About POWA Katlehong
POWA Katlehong is one of six community branch offices of People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), South Africa's oldest feminist women's rights organisation. The Katlehong branch is located at 667 Monise Section, Katlehong 1431 — in the heart of one of the East Rand's most densely populated townships, bordering Alberton and Germiston in Ekurhuleni. Katlehong has historically been affected by high rates of crime, domestic violence, and socioeconomic stress, making POWA's presence there a critical resource for women with few other accessible options.
Services at the Katlehong Branch
The Katlehong office provides POWA's core direct services to women who have experienced abuse:
Counselling — free individual face-to-face counselling with trained social workers and counsellors. Group counselling sessions provide a peer support environment for survivors to process experiences collectively.
Legal Advice and Court Support — POWA's Legal Department is accessible from the Katlehong branch. Counsellors can assist women with protection order applications, maintenance and divorce matters, and court preparation, and provide accompanying support when women attend court proceedings. POWA has established strong working relationships with the Ekurhuleni Metro Police and educates SAPS officers in the district on proper application of the Domestic Violence Act.
Telephonic Counselling and Referrals — for women who cannot attend in person, telephonic counselling is available via POWA's head office line (011 642 4345), and Katlehong branch staff can facilitate referrals to POWA's shelters or specialist services.
Rights Education — community outreach workshops and presentations at schools, clinics, and organisations in the Katlehong area on women's rights, the legal framework protecting GBV survivors, and how to access POWA's services.
Connection to POWA Head Office
All POWA branch offices are connected to the central legal, training, and advocacy functions of the head office in Berea. Women presenting at the Katlehong office who need shelter can be referred to POWA's East Rand or West Rand shelters. All services are free of charge.
