About

About SAVF Maroela Krisishuis

SAVF Maroela Krisishuis (Marula Crisis House) is the SAVF crisis shelter in Ba-Phalaborwa (formerly Phalaborwa), located at 29 Tambotie Street, Ba-Phalaborwa, Limpopo, 1389. The shelter is listed in the national Department of Social Development shelters database as "Africa Vrou Federasie Phalaborwa" — an NPO-managed facility with a bed capacity of 10. It is the primary GBV shelter for the entire Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality.

"Maroela" is the Afrikaans name for the marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) — an indigenous African tree deeply associated with the Limpopo Lowveld region where Ba-Phalaborwa is located.

Community Context

Ba-Phalaborwa is a mining and tourism town on the edge of the Kruger National Park, home to the Palabora Copper Mine. The municipality's population includes a significant proportion of mine workers and their families, as well as communities in surrounding rural villages. As with other mining communities, Ba-Phalaborwa faces the GBV risks associated with migrant labour, alcohol abuse, and economic inequality — making the Maroela Krisishuis a critical resource.

Services

  • Emergency residential shelter for abused women and their children (capacity: 10)
  • Social work services — professional support for residents
  • Counselling — individual and family therapeutic support
  • Exit planning and reintegration — supporting women toward independent, abuse-free futures

Note: The Khumbhekani VEP (NPO 067-236, 071 376 7755), which operates from the Lulekani SAPS in the same municipality, is a complementary organisation providing day-based GBV support without residential accommodation.
