About

About SAVF

SAVF was founded in Pretoria in 1904 by Georgiana Solomon, a Scottish-born activist, making it one of South Africa's oldest continuously operating welfare organisations — celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2024. SAVF stands as a nationally registered welfare organisation (001-446 NPO), dedicated to uplifting communities and transforming lives.

SAVF operates across five provinces: Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal. In 2021 alone, services reached over 164,154 individuals — from newborns in ECD centres to elderly residents in frail care homes.

Services

GBV Shelters — SAVF operates multiple crisis shelters for abused women and their children across their operational provinces, including the Carletonville Shelter (GP), Vanderbijlpark Shelter (GP), Standerton Family Crisis Centre (MP), and Maroela Krisishuis in Ba-Phalaborwa (LP). Shelter services include 24-hour housing, meals, social work therapy, counselling, grant assistance, legal referrals, life skills, and employment preparation.

Child and Youth Care — statutory social work, foster care, CYCCs, and child protection services.

Family Support — the FAMNET programme supports effective parenting and family stability.

ECD — early childhood development centres.

Social Work — community-based social work offices and drop-in centres.

Elderly Care — residential, frail care, and life-right housing.

Community Development — skills training, job creation, and poverty alleviation.
