SAVF Standerton Family Crisis Centre (Gesinskrisissentrum)

Open

SAVF Standerton is the Standerton branch of the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) — South Africa's oldest social welfare federation, established in 1904 following the Second Anglo-Boer War and now operating 31 social work offices across five provinces (Gauteng, KZN, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West). The Standerton Family Crisis Centre (Gesinskrisissentrum), located at 22 Schwickard Street, Standerton, Mpumalanga, provides emergency temporary accommodation and three meals per day to families and individuals in need, with a specific focus on child protection, social work services, and support for those who have experienced violence. Services include housing, meals, daily essentials (toiletries, clothing), life skills programmes, social grant facilitation (SASSA, Home Affairs), alternative accommodation referrals, and social work and family reunification services. The Centre works in partnership with SASSA, Home Affairs, hospitals, and clinics. It is a member of the broader SAVF network, which operates child and youth care centres, ECD centres, service centres for the elderly, charity shops, and multiple shelters across South Africa. Contact the Standerton Centre at 017 712 5031 or via the SAVF board at 078 315 6932.

About

The Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) — the South African Women's Federation — is one of the country's oldest surviving social welfare institutions, founded in 1904 in Pretoria in the aftermath of the Second Anglo-Boer War. Its first founder, Georgiana Solomon, together with Annie Botha (wife of General Louis Botha), mobilised in response to the suffering they saw in devastated communities after the war — launching sewing projects, job creation initiatives, and welfare services. In 1905, SAVF opened the Armstrong Berning Home for unmarried pregnant women and traumatised girls in Pretoria — a home that is still operating today. The organisation has been changing lives, as they put it, for over 120 years.

Today SAVF operates across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West, with 31 social work offices, multiple shelters, child and youth care centres, ECD centres, service centres for the elderly, charity shops, and a national headquarters in Pretoria. Its mission remains: to be "a carrier of hope for people with social needs."

SAVF Standerton Family Crisis Centre

The Standerton Family Crisis Centre (Gesinskrisissentrum) is SAVF's Mpumalanga shelter and social work centre in Standerton — a town of approximately 60,000–70,000 people in the Gert Sibande District, situated between Johannesburg and Ermelo on the N17. Standerton serves as a regional hub for a large, predominantly rural surrounding area, and its social needs are significant.

The Centre is registered under two NPO numbers — SAVF Standerton Social Services (001-527) for the broader social work services, and NPO 010-876 for the crisis centre itself. It operates from 22 Schwickard Street and is managed under SAVF's Mpumalanga regional structure, with Kathy Allie as regional manager.

Services

Emergency Temporary Accommodation — 24-hour shelter providing safe, comfortable, and secure living spaces for families and individuals in crisis. The shelter operates around the clock.

Three Daily Meals — Nutritious meals served three times per day to all residents.

Essential Supplies — Toiletries and clothing for residents who arrive with nothing.

Child Protection — A core focus of the Standerton centre, delivered in partnership with SAPS, the Department of Social Development, and other statutory partners.

Social Work Services — A comprehensive social work programme including: parenting skills support; life skills training; counselling for loss and grief; family contact plans (for cases of separation or divorce); parenting responsibility plans; foster care supervision; mediation; support for teenage parents; holistic child development programmes; and care for children exiting alternative care at age 18.

Social Grant Facilitation — Assistance with SASSA grants, Home Affairs documentation, Legal Aid applications, and access to health services — addressing the administrative barriers that prevent many vulnerable people from accessing the support they're entitled to.

Alternative Accommodation — Referrals to transitional housing to support residents moving toward independence after the crisis shelter.

Social Work and Reunification Services — Specialised services for vulnerable children and families, including family group conferences, mediation, and psychosocial support to facilitate reunification where it is safe and appropriate.

The SAVF Network Advantage

Being part of SAVF means the Standerton centre can connect its clients to a national network: if a family needs to relocate to Gauteng, KZN, Limpopo, or North West, SAVF has a social work presence in all five provinces that can facilitate that transition. This is a significant practical advantage for survivors fleeing abusers across provincial lines.
