SOS Social Centre — Cape Town (HIV/AIDS Community Programme) Since 2002, the Cape Town SOS Social Centre has run a community-based HIV/AIDS child care and support programme. Affected families receive material and medical support, education, counselling, and income-generating assistance. HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaigns are also organised. Crucially, the centre supports families — particularly women — to remain the primary caregivers of their children, preventing unnecessary family separation PROTECTION Ensuring care and protection when there is no family or it is not in a child or young person’s best interest to stay in the family Our activities include directly caring for children and young people, also in emergencies; working with partners to train foster parents and with governments to implement care standards; supporting young people to become self-reliant, and much more. ADVOCACY Changing policy and practice to improve the situation of children and young people without parental care or at risk of losing it This pillar of action focuses on systemic change. Among other activities, we work with partners to create platforms for children and young people to bring the issues they face into discussions at the local, national and global level.

About

SOS Children's Villages is the world's largest non-governmental organisation focused on children without parental care, operating in over 130 countries. In South Africa since 1984, they care for more than 5,000 children and youth annually across 8 provinces through two main programmes — Family-like Alternative Care (for children who have lost parental care) and Family Strengthening (to prevent families from breaking down in the first place).

What They Offer Families and Children

SOS Children's Villages — Family-like Residential Care For children who have been orphaned, abandoned, abused, or whose parents are unable to care for them, SOS provides family-like residential homes — with a dedicated SOS mother, siblings, a house, and a village community. Children grow up with the stability and love of a consistent family environment. There are eight SOS Villages across South Africa.

Family Strengthening Programme This programme works to prevent family breakdown before it happens — targeting vulnerable families at risk of losing the ability to care for their children. Support includes: psychosocial counselling, access to basic services, food and material support, HIV/AIDS care, income-generating support, parenting skills, and referrals. In Cape Town, this programme runs in communities in and around Langa and Gugulethu.

Crucially, the centre supports families — particularly women — to remain the primary caregivers of their children, preventing unnecessary family separation.

SOS Youth Facility (Cape Town) Established in 2000, the Youth Facility supports young people who have outgrown the SOS Village — providing accommodation and support while they pursue higher education or vocational training and prepare for independent adult life.

SOS Kindergarten (Cape Town) An on-site kindergarten with capacity for 75 children offers early childhood development support — open to children from the community as well as those in the SOS Village.

If you are a parent or caregiver in need of support to keep your family together, contact the SOS Family Strengthening Programme in your province. In Cape Town: 011 706 6869 or info@sossouthafrica.org.za.
