About

About the KaNyemazane / Kabokweni Thuthuzela Care Centre

The KaNyemazane Thuthuzela Care Centre — also referred to as the Kabokweni TCC in more recent NPA documentation — is a government-operated, 24-hour one-stop facility for survivors of rape, sexual assault, and gender-based violence. It is located at Themba Hospital, Kabokweni Main Road, KaNyemazane/Kabokweni, in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality of Mpumalanga province, approximately 15 km east of Mbombela (Nelspruit).

It is operated by the NPA's Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) Unit in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and other government departments.

Naming Note

KaNyemazane and Kabokweni are adjacent townships in the greater Mbombela area; the TCC is situated at Themba Hospital which serves both communities. Both names appear in NPA documentation — "KaNyemazane TCC" in older documents and "Kabokweni TCC" in the 2022–2023 official list. They refer to the same facility.

Services Offered — What Happens When You Arrive

The TCC model provides the most comprehensive pre-trial services for victims of gender-based violence, including psychosocial, medical, and legal services under one roof, with a victim-centred approach based on respect, comfort, restoring dignity, and ensuring justice.

The full process at any TCC, including KaNyemazane/Kabokweni, is:

  1. Welcome and crisis support from a trained TCC Coordinator or Victim Assistant Officer
  2. Medical examination with consent; nurse present throughout; clothing may be taken as evidence
  3. Bath or shower facilities available after the examination
  4. Police statement taken at the TCC — you may open a case immediately or at a later stage
  5. Counselling by a social worker or nurse
  6. HIV PEP, STI treatment, emergency contraception prescribed and follow-up arranged
  7. Long-term counselling referral arranged
  8. Transportation or place of safety arranged if needed
  9. Specialist TCC State Advocate consultation and prosecutor-guided investigation (PGI)
  10. Court preparation if the case proceeds to trial
  11. Ongoing case updates through the Victim Assistant Officer
