About
About Ten81
Ten81 is the flagship clinic and support centre of OUT LGBT Well-being, South Africa's second-oldest LGBTQ+ organisation, founded in 1994. The clinic takes its name from its original address at 1081 Pretorius Street, Hatfield, Pretoria — now relocated to 1310 Stanza Bopape Street, Colbyn (bordering Hatfield). The Ten81 clinic is staffed with full-time nurses and an in-clinic doctor, and has historically completed close to 7,000 appointments per year.
OUT and Ten81 work on local, provincial, national, continental, and international levels, with direct services in Tshwane/Pretoria and mobile outreach teams reaching across the wider region.
Services
Sexual Health Clinic — free services including HIV testing and management, ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy), PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) — critical for sexual assault survivors — PrEP, STI screening and treatment, TB screening, clean needles, wound care, and overdose prevention. Services are delivered by nurses and a doctor in a safe, non-judgmental environment designed specifically for LGBTQ+ clients and MSM who regularly face discrimination in mainstream healthcare settings.
Psychosocial Counselling — individual counselling and emotional support for clients navigating trauma, identity, relationships, mental health challenges, and the aftermath of violence or hate crimes.
Love Not Hate Programme and Legal Clinic — free legal advice and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals who have experienced hate crimes, discrimination, or bias-motivated violence. This is a critical service in a country where LGBTQ+ people — particularly lesbian women and transgender individuals — face extremely high rates of targeted sexual and physical violence. The clinic helps survivors understand their rights, report crimes, and navigate the legal system.
Mobile Outreach — Ten81's mobile teams extend HIV and sexual health services across the Tshwane region, reaching communities where LGBTQ+ individuals may face barriers to accessing clinic-based support.
GBV Relevance
LGBTQ+ people in South Africa — particularly Black lesbian women — face disproportionate rates of sexual violence, including so-called "corrective rape." Transgender individuals face high rates of targeted violence. Ten81 and OUT's Love Not Hate programme are specifically equipped to support these survivors in a setting that affirms their identity and does not re-traumatise them through homophobic or transphobic responses. The clinic's PEP services are directly relevant to sexual assault survivors who need post-exposure prophylaxis within 72 hours of assault.
