The Ark KZN
Openfor men of all ages who are destitute, pensioners without adequate care, or in post-rehabilitation recovery. Residents actively contribute to the running of the ministry through voluntary roles, fostering dignity, self-worth, and belonging. The Ark's services include residential accommodation; three meals daily; healthcare (medicine supply, treatment, and counselling); skills and personality development programmes; post-addiction recovery groups; connection to churches and Christian fellowship; and assistance with social grant and pension registration — helping men access the state support they are entitled to. The Ark gives back to the wider community by sharing excess food and donations with a local church soup kitchen and a crèche. Registered as a Section 18A PBO (donations tax-deductible), B-BBEE compliant, and holding an SED certificate, The Ark is a legitimate, accountable faith-based organisation. While The Ark serves men — not women or children — it is relevant to the GBV landscape as a resource for male survivors of violence and abuse, for men recovering from addiction who are associated with GBV situations, and as a referral for destitute men encountered in the course of GBV casework in the Durban area. About
Who The Ark Serves
The Ark KZN explicitly serves three categories of men: - Destitute men — those without income, shelter, or family support - Pensioners — elderly men who cannot manage independently and who lack adequate family care - Post-rehabilitation residents — men who have completed addiction rehabilitation and who need a stable, supportive, sober environment as they reintegrate into community life
Men of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. The Ark's faith is Christian, but its doors are open to men of any background who need its services.
More Than Shelter: A Real Home
The Ark is deliberate about the distinction between temporary accommodation and a home. Its residents are not passive recipients of charity — they actively contribute to the running of the ministry through various voluntary roles, creating what The Ark describes as "a true sense of home": belonging, responsibility, routine, and community. This model reflects a deep understanding of what destitute and recovering men most need — not just a bed, but a reason to get up in the morning and a community that values their contribution.
Services
Residential Accommodation Men live on-site at The Ark's Cliffdale property — a stable, structured, Christian home environment.
Three Meals Daily Comprehensive daily dining — breakfast, lunch, and supper — ensuring adequate nutrition for all residents.
Healthcare Medicine supply, treatment coordination, and counselling are available to residents — addressing the health needs of a population that has often had limited healthcare access.
Skills and Personality Development Programmes supporting residents' practical skills and personal growth — building the capacities they need for eventual re-integration into independent community life.
Post-Addiction Recovery Group A dedicated recovery group for men in post-rehabilitation — providing the ongoing peer support, accountability, and community that research consistently identifies as essential to sustained sobriety.
Church Connection and Fellowship The Ark connects residents with local churches and Christian fellowship — providing spiritual support and social integration into a wider faith community.
Grant and Pension Registration Critically practical: The Ark assists residents to register for social grants and pension payouts — helping men access the state support to which they are entitled, and which many destitute men have never successfully claimed due to administrative barriers.
Community Giving Excess food and donations from The Ark are shared with a local church's soup kitchen and a neighbourhood crèche — embedding the ministry in a wider web of community care.
Governance and Accountability
The Ark KZN is registered as a Section 18A PBO (making donations tax-deductible), B-BBEE compliant, and holds an SED (Socio-Economic Development) certificate — all publicly available for download on the website. This level of documentation reflects a well-governed, accountable organisation that operates transparently within South Africa's NPO regulatory framework.
Relevance to GBV
The Ark KZN serves men — not women or children seeking safety from violence. It is therefore not a primary GBV survivor resource in the traditional sense. However, it is relevant to the GBV landscape in several ways: as a resource for male survivors of violence and abuse who are destitute; as a referral point for men recovering from addiction who have perpetrated or experienced violence and who need a stable recovery environment; and as a point of contact for social workers and GBV organisations in the Durban area who encounter destitute men in the course of their casework. The Ark's post-rehabilitation and recovery model also intersects with GBV prevention, given the established links between substance abuse and intimate partner violence.
