About
The Hope Exchange — formerly The Carpenter's Shop — is a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation dedicated to the dignity and recovery of people experiencing homelessness in the city. Based in Roeland Street in the Cape Town CBD, they operate from a founding belief: that most people on the street are there because of circumstances beyond their control, not because of bad character or bad choices — and that hope starts with being treated as a human being.
While The Hope Exchange is not a specialised GBV organisation, it is a vital resource for survivors of abuse who have found themselves homeless — either after fleeing a dangerous home, or as a result of the poverty and instability that abuse often leaves in its wake. Their wraparound model takes people from the street through dignity, support, skills, and employment toward reintegration with their families and communities.
What They Offer Survivors and People Experiencing Homelessness
Ablution Facilities — Daily Dignity Every weekday from 7:30am–10:00am, The Hope Exchange opens its doors to anyone on the street who needs to shower, wash their clothes, and access basic hygiene. This is often the most immediate thing a person needs to feel human again — and to be presentable enough to seek employment or access other services.
Meals and Food Support Hot meals and food assistance are provided through partnerships with other NPOs — addressing the most basic survival need.
Wellness Clinic A wellness clinic provides basic health screening and healthcare access on-site — partnering with other organisations to ensure people receive the medical care they need.
Clothing Assistance Clothing donations are given to clients — a practical and dignity-affirming service for people who have arrived with nothing.
Social Work and Psychosocial Support The Hope Exchange's Social Care team works with every client to assess their situation, provide counselling, identify challenges like addiction or mental illness, and create a personalised plan toward reintegration. For survivors whose homelessness is linked to abuse, the social worker can make referrals to specialist GBV organisations.
Life Skills Training Structured life skills training helps clients develop the practical and personal tools they need to reintegrate successfully — building confidence, communication, and daily living skills.
Geoff Burton House — Second-Phase Shelter for Employed Men For men who have found employment but are not yet able to afford independent housing, Geoff Burton House provides affordable, short-term accommodation for up to 40 residents — with psychosocial support, savings planning, and a structured pathway to full independence. Residents pay a programme fee in advance and commit to sober living and active participation in their personal development plans.
Second Chance Charity Shop and Car Wash — Social Enterprises The Hope Exchange runs a charity shop and a professional car wash, both of which provide employment for individuals transitioning out of homelessness — creating dignified income and work experience.
Reintegration and Family Reunification The ultimate goal of every Hope Exchange client journey is reintegration into society and, where possible, reunification with their family. In their most recently reported year, over 60 clients were assisted with reintegration or reunification.
The Hope Exchange is in Cape Town's CBD, at 14A Roeland Street. Ablutions are open Monday–Friday, 7:30–10:00am. For support or referrals, call 021 461 5508 or email info@thehopeexchange.org.
