About

About Vhathu Vhothe Abuse Centre

Vhathu Vhothe Abuse Centre takes its name from the Tshivenda phrase "vhathu vhothe," meaning "all people" — a statement of radical inclusivity that signals the Centre's commitment to serving every person who needs help, regardless of gender, age, background, or community. The Centre is located at 4360 Lesedi Street, Station 2, Nellmapius, a township on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria in the City of Tshwane municipality.

Nellmapius is a large, densely populated township in the Atteridgeville/Nellmapius corridor, characterised by high unemployment, informal housing, and limited access to social services. GBV rates in the area are consistent with national averages in similar socioeconomic contexts, and community-based victim empowerment organisations like Vhathu Vhothe fill a critical gap in an area under-served by formal state social work services.

Services

Based on information from the DSD Eastern Tshwane VEP network, Vhathu Vhothe Abuse Centre provides:

  • Counselling and psychosocial support for survivors of domestic violence, rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, and family violence. Services are provided in a culturally sensitive and non-judgmental environment.
  • Victim advocacy and information — helping survivors understand their legal rights, the court process, protection order procedures, and how to engage with SAPS effectively.
  • Community awareness and education — outreach to Nellmapius and surrounding areas on GBV prevention, child rights, and where to seek help.
  • Referrals to specialist services including shelters, legal aid, health facilities, and DSD social workers for statutory intervention when required.

Tshivenda Community Context

The name "Vhathu Vhothe" reflects the multicultural character of Nellmapius, where Vhavenda, Shangaan, Sotho, and other communities live side by side. The Centre's Tshivenda name signals a particular commitment to serving Vhavenda-speaking residents, who are a significant community in the Tshwane East area but who often face language barriers in accessing formal social services.
