About

About the Victim Empowerment Programme – Lephalale

The Lephalale VEP is located at 3 Herman Street, Lephalale, 0555, in Limpopo's Waterberg District. Lephalale is a mining and energy town, home to the Medupi Power Station and the Grootegeluk coal mine, and serves as the main urban centre for a vast, sparsely populated district bordering Botswana. The town and its surrounding communities face significant GBV, with seasonal and migrant labour patterns, socioeconomic inequality between mining households and surrounding subsistence communities, and limited access to social support services contributing to heightened vulnerability.

Community Context

The Waterberg District's vast geography means that many communities surrounding Lephalale are extremely isolated — with some villages several hours' drive from the nearest town on unpaved roads. The Lephalale VEP serves as the primary victim support infrastructure in the district for survivors who cannot access services in Polokwane. The programme addresses the full scope of violent crime and abuse that is prevalent in both the urban and rural dimensions of this district.

Services

The VEP typically provides: - Psychosocial support and counselling for survivors of domestic violence, rape, child abuse, and other violent crime. - Victim advocacy and rights information — guiding survivors through police reporting, court processes, and protection order applications. - Case management and referrals to health facilities, shelters, legal aid, and DSD social workers. - Community education on GBV, women's rights, and available services, reaching surrounding rural communities.
