Victim Empowerment Programme (Lesedi)

The Lesedi Victim Empowerment Programme serves the Ga-Sekorokoro / Moshate village community in Trichardtsdal, Limpopo, providing community-based psychosocial support, victim advocacy, and GBV awareness in one of South Africa's most rural and isolated districts. 'Lesedi' means 'light' — reflecting this programme's role as the primary point of support for GBV survivors in a community far removed from urban services.

About

About the Lesedi Victim Empowerment Programme

The Lesedi VEP is located in the Ga-Sekorokoro Village, Moshate area, Trichardtsdal, Limpopo (0890) — in the Maruleng Local Municipality of the Mopani District. Trichardtsdal is a very small rural town in a mountainous area near the Blyde River Canyon, approximately 60km south of Tzaneen. The Ga-Sekorokoro / Moshate area refers to a grouping of villages under a traditional authority in this district.

Community Context

The Maruleng Local Municipality is one of the most rural and under-serviced areas of Limpopo. Communities in the Trichardtsdal area are characterised by subsistence farming, seasonal employment, very high poverty, and extremely limited infrastructure. Access to social services requires long travel times on difficult roads. The traditional authority (Moshate) structure is the primary governance framework for these villages, and community-based VEP programmes that operate within or near traditional structures are often the only accessible support for GBV survivors in the area.

The Moshate VEP Research Context

Research on domestic violence against men conducted in Limpopo (published in peer-reviewed literature) specifically includes "Moshate" as one of the GBV-focused NGO areas studied — confirming the presence of organised GBV support activity in this community. The village-level VEP model is designed to bring support as close to survivors as possible, reducing the geographic and cultural barriers that prevent many rural community members from accessing town-based services.

Services

  • Community-based psychosocial support and counselling for survivors of domestic violence, GBV, and abuse in the Ga-Sekorokoro / Moshate village cluster.
  • Victim advocacy — explaining rights and guiding survivors through the reporting process in a culturally accessible way.
  • Awareness and prevention campaigns in local schools and community gatherings.
  • Referrals to the nearest SAPS (Trichardtsdal), health facility, and DSD social worker for statutory intervention.
