Women's Net
OpenStrengthens women's and girls' movements for social change through the strategic use of information communication technologies (ICTs). Its work is grounded in a conviction that deep, sustainable change for women's rights requires women's collective action — and that access to information, freedom of expression, and digital tools are essential enablers of that action. Women'sNet operates as a feminist information hub and digital capacity-building organisation: its website serves as a hub of information by women, about women and gender, with a focus on South African and African content; it provides ICT training to women, girls, and women's and gender organisations, helping them take control of their own content creation and digital communication; it facilitates content dissemination for advocacy and movement-building; and it addresses the specific intersection of cyberbullying and GBV online — recognising that digital spaces are not neutral but are sites of violence against women and girls that require specific knowledge and tools to navigate safely. Women'sNet produced the **ICTs for Feminist Movement Building Activist Toolkit** (in partnership with JASS and the Association for Progressive Communications/APC) — a resource designed to help activists harness ICTs for more effective, strategic, resilient, visible, and safe movements. Women'sNet is not a GBV crisis service. But for GBV organisations, survivors who are digital advocates, and activists working on women's rights in South Africa, Women'sNet is a knowledge, training, and movement-building resource. About
What Women'sNet Is
Women'sNet is a South African feminist NGO that advances gender equality and justice through the use of Information and Communication Technologies. It is based in Clovelly, Cape Town, but its mandate is national (with pan-African aspirations) — the digital nature of its work means that location is less of a constraint than for direct service organisations.
Its identity is explicitly feminist: it does not merely seek to include women in digital spaces as they already exist, but to support women to reshape those spaces, use them on women's own terms, and build power through digital connectivity.
ICT Training for Women and Women's Organisations
Women'sNet provides training to women, girls, and women's organisations in how to use ICTs strategically — creating content, managing communications, building networks, and advocating effectively online. This includes training in social media management, content creation, digital security, and online advocacy tools. For small GBV organisations with limited digital capacity, this kind of training is practically transformative.
Information Hub
The Women'sNet website functions as a curated repository of information about women and gender in South Africa and Africa — resources, research, news, community stories, event information, and links to organisations and networks. It is designed to help women activists find the people, issues, resources, and tools they need for social activism.
Cyberbullying and Online GBV
Women'sNet has developed specific content and resources addressing cyberbullying and GBV online — a growing area of women's safety that many organisations are underprepared to address. The organisation's cyberbullying and GBV page provides information and guidance for women and organisations navigating online harassment, digital stalking, non-consensual image sharing, and other forms of technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
ICTs for Feminist Movement Building Activist Toolkit
In partnership with JASS (Just Associates) and the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), Women'sNet produced the ICTs for Feminist Movement Building Activist Toolkit — a freely available practical guide for activists wanting to harness digital tools for movement-building. The toolkit is available for download from the Women'sNet website and covers digital strategy, safety, communication, and network building for feminist organisations.
Relevance to GBV Survivors and Organisations
Women'sNet is not a direct service for GBV survivors in crisis. It does not provide shelter, counselling, or a helpline. Its relevance to this website's audience is primarily at two levels: for GBV organisations seeking digital capacity-building training, online advocacy tools, or resources on technology-facilitated GBV; and for survivors and activists who are building digital voices, seeking information, or navigating cyberbullying and online abuse alongside or following a GBV experience. The growing recognition that technology-facilitated violence is a form of GBV makes Women'sNet's work increasingly central rather than peripheral to the GBV response landscape.
