Youth for Christ KwaZulu-Natal (YFC/KZN)

Open

Youth for Christ KwaZulu-Natal (YFC/KZN) is a faith-rooted child and youth development NPO (NPO 004-257) founded in May 1985 in Pietermaritzburg, operating across Pietermaritzburg and Durban with a mandate to bring hope to children, youth, and families in disadvantaged KZN communities — townships, informal settlements, and peri-rural areas where poverty, HIV/AIDS, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and unemployment intersect. YFC/KZN is clear that it is not a church and not a missions organisation — it is a development agency whose core business is children, youth, parents/caregivers, and community. Its programmes address homelessness and street living (street work and rehabilitation placements for whoonga-addicted youth), HIV/AIDS response, orphan and vulnerable children support, gender empowerment and GBV dialogue, sexuality and reproductive health education, leadership development, and economic strengthening. Key services include: a **City Drop-In Centre** at 31 Burger Street, PMB (for children and youth under 18); **Elizabeth's Children's Temporary Shelters** at 230 Pine Street, PMB (DSD-registered, for both girls and boys — formerly known as Khayalethu); family reunification services; social work services for families in need; an edutainment team for life skills events in the uMgungundlovu area; and **Project Hope** — an entrepreneurship and income-generation initiative for women, youth, and children in PMB and Durban communities. YFC/KZN hosts regular GBV dialogues in partnership with communities and stakeholders like SAPS and LifeLine, particularly in areas like Inanda where GBV rates are acutely high. Head office: 226 Pine Street, Pietermaritzburg. Phone: +27 33 345 2970.

About

YFC/KZN takes pains to clarify its identity: it is not a church. It is not a missions organisation. It is a development agency. This matters in the KZN context, where faith-based organisations span a wide spectrum from purely evangelical to deeply developmental. YFC/KZN has the Christian spiritual commitments of its parent body, but its operational identity is social development — and its projects are evaluated on outcomes, not conversions.

The Communities YFC/KZN Serves

YFC/KZN works primarily in townships, informal settlements, and peri-rural areas in the uMgungundlovu District (Pietermaritzburg and surrounds) and in Durban. These are communities characterised by high unemployment, high HIV infection rates, sexual abuse and domestic violence, substance addiction (particularly whoonga/nyaope — a highly destructive drug prevalent in KZN's townships), family breakdown, and poverty. Children growing up in these environments face multi-layered risks that no single intervention can address alone.

Key Services and Programmes

Elizabeth's Children's Temporary Shelters (formerly Khayalethu Boys Shelter) Located at 230 Pine Street, Pietermaritzburg — DSD-registered temporary shelters for both girls and boys (the name was changed and expanded to include girls). These shelters provide emergency and temporary residential care for children and youth who are homeless, at risk, or who need a safe placement while family or care situations are investigated and resolved.

City Drop-In Centre At 31 Burger Street, Pietermaritzburg — a day facility for children and youth under 18, providing a safe space, activities, meals, and case support for children who are living on the streets or at acute risk.

Street Work and Whoonga Rehabilitation YFC/KZN conducts active street work with children and youth living on the streets, including those addicted to whoonga (a mixture of heroin and other substances that has devastated many KZN township communities). Rehabilitation placements are made for those seeking recovery.

Basic Education Programme for Street-Living Youth For children and youth who have been out of the formal school system — due to street living, family breakdown, or displacement — YFC/KZN provides a basic education programme to restore functional literacy and numeracy.

Family Reunification Services A core stated goal of YFC/KZN is to reunite children with their families where possible. Its social workers work with both children and their families to address the underlying circumstances — including GBV, substance abuse, poverty, and dysfunction — that led to a child being on the streets or in temporary shelter, and to create conditions for safe family reintegration.

Social Work Services YFC/KZN employs social workers who provide case management, family support, referrals, and advocacy for families requiring professional assistance — including families dealing with domestic violence, child abuse, and poverty.

GBV Dialogues and Awareness YFC/KZN has an established track record of hosting Gender-Based Violence dialogues in its communities of practice — particularly in areas like Inanda, where GBV rates are acutely high. These dialogues bring together community members, SAPS, LifeLine, and other stakeholders to raise awareness, support survivors, and encourage reporting. The organisation explicitly names sexual abuse and domestic violence as key issues it addresses.

Project Hope An entrepreneurship and income-generation initiative, Project Hope is aimed at women, youth, and children living in PMB and Durban communities — building economic skills, promoting independence, and creating sustainable livelihoods for those trapped in poverty and exploitation.

Edutainment Team YFC/KZN's edutainment team delivers life skills programming at events across the uMgungundlovu area — reaching schools, community gatherings, and youth events with interactive, accessible content on topics including GBV, relationships, sexuality, and personal development.

HIV/AIDS Work Active HIV/AIDS programming in the City of PMB and surrounding communities, addressing prevention, care, and support for those affected.

Durban Presence

YFC/KZN also operates from 1280 Umgeni Road, Durban — extending its reach into eThekwini Municipality and the communities of Durban's northern corridors.

Relevance to GBV Survivors

YFC/KZN is not a women's shelter. But for GBV survivors in the uMgungundlovu and Durban areas who have children — particularly children who have been living on the streets, who are addicted, who have been abused, or who need temporary residential care — YFC/KZN's children's shelters, drop-in centre, social work services, and family reunification programme are directly relevant. The organisation can receive children through DSD and SAPS referrals, and its social workers can provide family support for women navigating the aftermath of GBV with children in crisis.
